Mississippi WHPC Launch

9 May 2025 - Mississippi Women in High Performance Computing Officially Launches as an Independent Statewide Organization

Mississippi Women in High Performance Computing (MSWHPC) is proud to announce its official launch as an independent organization, marking a new era of opportunity, advocacy, and support for women and underrepresented individuals in computing across the state. Formerly known as WHPC@HPC2 located at Mississippi State University, MSWHPC now stands as a separate entity, dedicated to creating an inclusive space for professionals, students, and researchers from institutions and industries throughout Mississippi.

In today’s shifting political and economic landscape, MSWHPC recognizes the critical need for community-led initiatives that uplift and empower women in technical fields. By branching out from Mississippi State University, MSWHPC ensures accessibility to all individuals statewide, fostering collaboration across multiple institutions, organizations, and professional sectors. This transition strengthens its ability to advocate for equitable representation in HPC-related opportunities.

As part of this mission, MSWHPC will be actively engaging with communities across the state through networking events, career development workshops, and industry panels. The organization will also maintain a statewide job board, incorporating direct feedback from the community to help professionals discover roles tailored to their expertise and aspirations. In addition, MSWHPC will highlight the achievements of women and other underrepresented individuals in high performance computing.

The passage of Mississippi House Bill 1193 threatens to place significant restrictions on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within state-funded institutions, prohibiting universities from maintaining programs that promote these efforts. Similarly, institutions that receive federal funding have also faced crackdowns, as new federal policies increasingly are restricting these programs. As a result, MSWHPC has transitioned into an independent entity, ensuring that it can continue advocating for representation, inclusion, and professional growth for women and underrepresented individuals in computing throughout Mississippi. By separating from state institutions, MSWHPC remains free to organize events, highlight accomplishments, and support community-driven initiatives without constraint. While the circumstances surrounding this shift are challenging, we have also been presented an opportunity: MSWHPC is now better positioned to grow beyond a single university and expand its efforts across the entire region, engaging more institutions, communities, and professionals statewide.
